Kong. Fortunately through the good offices of Mr.Fung Wah Chuen he

succeeded in getting rid of the Tsung Hing Theatre at the end of the

same year, and, after paying off the mortgage and some of his pri-

vate dets, he got back about £20,000 which he invested in a house

No.7 West Terrace where he resided till 1912.

Between 1897 and 1908 the annual income from his profes-

sionał was between $4,000 and £5,000 but never exceeded the latter

amount. In the meantime his family was increasing and he had to

provide schooling for his grown up children and at the end of 1908

I understand he was indebted to his sister ladan Wu Ting Fang, who advanced him money since 1897 to meet family expenses, in the sum of

831,000. When he bought his house No.7 West Terrace he also bought

the next house No.8 for his sister. But soon after his sister

required him to take it over which he did by borrowing a loan of

$12,000.

In 1909 the roof of these houses were in a dangerous conditions and Sir Kai was obliged to have a new one put on. This cost him over 5,000. As he was heavily indebted to his sister he could not very well go to her again for further loans and was oblig‐

ed to approach Mr. Au Tack for assistance. From that time onward

till his death Mr. Au was the man who advanced him money from time to time to keep up his position and family.

In 1910 Sir Kai and Mr. Au Tack paid a visit to Dr. Wu Ting Fang at Shanghai. It was on that occasion that Madam Tu gave Mr. Au 10,000 to be dealt with by him in any way he liked in order to make some money for Sir Kai's support. Finding that this sum was too small to make much profit Mr.Au got Hr. Cheung Sun Woo to join him in a land investment scheme with a view of assisting Sir Kai by giving him a part of the profits which they may make from it. These two gentlemen however succeeded in getting for Sir Kai, between 1910 and 1912, a sum of $13,000. Through Mr. Cheung's efforts Sir Kai was able to get rid of his houses los.7 and 8 West Terrace in September 1912 at a very handsome price by which he

received a substantial sum of $12,000 after paying off his mortgages
